SL stands for Super Leicht (Super Light) and was based around American importer Max Hoffman's idea for an automobile that would attract performance enthusiasts in the post-war American market. The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class features sports cars designed for high speed and long distance driving, hence the combination of performance and luxury. In 1954, the 300 SL got the first “SL” designation and featured what is known as gullwing doors (doors that are hinged on the roof and represent wings when both doors are opened). Today's SL-Class keeps up with Mercedes-Benz's innovation and technology that provides a thrilling 0-60mph experience.
